Documenting a Single Cannabis Plant’s Entire Life in Photos

Growing your own cannabis plant is more than a hobby - it’s a journey worth remembering. Whether you're a first-timer or a seasoned cultivator, tracking one plant from seed to harvest (and beyond) is a rewarding way to learn, reflect, and maybe even flex your green thumb. In this Time Capsule Grow, we follow a single plant from its very beginning, capturing 20 distinct moments in time through photographs. Each stage tells its own story of growth, struggle, and triumph.

1. The Chosen Seed

It all starts with a single seed - tiny but packed with potential. Choosing the right genetics sets the tone for the entire grow.

2. Germination Begins

We used the tried-and-true paper towel method. Within 48 hours, that little seed split open and a taproot emerged.

3. First Signs of Life (Day 1 in Soil)

The seedling is officially tucked into its new home. We gently placed it root-down into organic soil under soft lights.

4. Cotyledons Unfurl

Those baby leaves (cotyledons) are the first to say hello. Not true leaves yet, but still a major milestone!

5. First True Leaves Appear

The iconic serrated cannabis leaves begin to grow. This is when it really starts looking like weed.

6. Strong Seedling Stage (Week 2)

A noticeable growth spurt kicks in. Roots are digging deep while stems are strengthening.

7. Veg Mode: Stretch Begins (Week 3)

The plant starts to stretch upward, reaching toward the grow light. We’ve upgraded the pot and adjusted the light height.

8. Lush Foliage Development (Week 4)

This is the vegetative stage in full swing. We're seeing 5 and 7-blade leaves, and the plant is drinking more water daily.

9. Low-Stress Training Begins

We started LST to improve airflow and maximize light exposure. Gently bending stems without breaking them.

10. Pre-Flower Stretch (Week 5-6)

The plant is getting tall fast. This pre-flower stretch is a sign that flowering is just around the corner.

11. First Signs of Flower (Pistils Appear)

White hairs (pistils) pop at the nodes. It’s a girl! Flowering has officially begun.

12. Week 2 of Flower: Budlets Forming

Tiny bud sites are forming across every cola, and the plant smells a little stronger every day.

13. Mid-Flower Glory (Week 4-5)

We’re seeing stacked bud sites, a deeper aroma, and the first traces of visible trichomes.

14. Frosted Beauty (Week 6)

The plant looks like it was dusted with powdered sugar. Trichomes cover the buds, leaves, and even the stems.

15. Trichome Check (Week 7-8)

We used a jeweler’s loupe to monitor trichomes. Most are cloudy now - almost ready.

16. The Final Flush

We flushed the plant with clean water for 10 days to improve flavor and burn quality. Leaves began fading to yellow.

17. Harvest Day!

After a long journey, it was time to cut her down. We trimmed the fan leaves and hung the branches in our dry tent.

18. Dry & Trim

After 10 days, the buds snapped instead of bent - perfect. We gave them a careful manicure and saved the trim for edibles.

19. Cure Jars (Week 1 of Cure)

The buds are now curing in mason jars, burped daily for moisture control. The smell gets better with each open.

20. First Smoke: A Moment to Remember

The moment we’ve all been waiting for. The grow was a success, and now it’s time to enjoy the fruits of our labor.
